Legacy giving (also called planned giving or bequests) is a way to make a future donation to our organization through your will, trust, or estate plan.
Leaving a gift in your will allows you to support the causes you care about beyond your lifetime. It can also provide tax benefits for your estate and help shape your legacy.
Here are the most common types of charitable gifts you can include in your will, along with brief explanations:
1. Cash Bequest
Example: “I give $10,000 to The Adventure Project Corp, located at 228 Park Ave S, PMB 86132, New York, NY, 10003-1502, for its general purposes.”
Pros: Simple and straightforward.
Tip: Ensure the charity’s full legal name and address are correct to avoid confusion.
2. Percentage of Estate
Example: “I give 10% of my residuary estate to The Adventure Project Corp, located at 228 Park Ave S, PMB 86132, New York, NY, 10003-1502.”
Pros: Keeps the gift proportional to your estate’s final value.
Good for: Those uncertain about future asset values or wanting to balance gifts to family and charity.
3. Residuary Bequest
Example: “I give the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate to The Adventure Project Corp.”
Pros: Ensures the charity receives what’s left after other obligations (debts, taxes, and specific gifts) are settled.
Often used when someone wants to support family first and give remaining assets to charity.
4. Contingent Bequest
Example: “If my spouse does not survive me, I give $50,000 to The Adventure Project Corp.”
Used when: You want to provide for loved ones first, and the charity only receives the gift under certain conditions.
Not at all. Legacy gifts of any size are deeply appreciated and can make a meaningful impact. Even a small percentage of your estate can help sustain our mission.
