Discover Grace’s inspiring journey as a single mom and farmer in Kenya. Learn how irrigation transformed her farm and empowered her community.
Grace, a farmer in Kenya, has spent the last 14 years managing her family alone after her husband left.
"For the first five years, it was not easy," she says. "But when I decided I am the person my kids are relying on, I (be)came strong."
Her determination led her to embrace farming, despite immense challenges. Without access to water, she relied on donkeys to fetch it from a kilometer away and carried heavy jugs herself. When Grace learned about KickStart’s irrigation pumps, she knew it was a game-changer.
"The pump has made it easier," she explains. "Now, I just use one person to water the veggies, and it saves me so much energy."
Grace’s farm has become a vital resource for her community. Her organic vegetables are in high demand. "The customers love the vegetables because they are healthy and fresh," she says. Her decision to grow organically stems from a personal commitment: "I feel safe with my food and my family when I avoid chemicals."
Grace also cares for an adopted daughter who sought her out after losing her own family. "She said she was looking for someone she could call ‘mother,’ and I decided to answer," Grace shares.
In the future, Grace dreams of expanding her farm and poultry business. She wants to provide better education for her children and to get electricity.
Through her resilience, Grace has turned hardship into opportunity. "I want a good life for my kids and for myself," she says. "With strength and support, I know it’s possible."
